Historically, the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree were used to make tea, which led to the name "Tea Tree" Essential Oil. This concentrated liquid is extracted through steam distillation and is native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. It contains valuable antiseptic and anti-fungal properties that are attributed to its terpenoid constituents, making it a commonly used ingredient in personal care products and medicines. Tea tree oil is believed to provide relief for congestion, colds, coughs, and flu, and is also used to treat acne, fungal infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, haemorrhoids, athlete's foot, and muscle and joint injuries. When added to bath water, it can help to control bacteria. However, it should never be ingested and is usually only recommended for use by adults. It should also be kept away from children and pets, and is not advised for use by pregnant or lactating individuals.
